Emily Anderson began her studies at St. Philip’s College (SPC) in Fall 2022 and is a current Surgical Technology student.

"Initially, I wanted to be an X-ray tech because my grandpa was diagnosed with cancer, which had been misdiagnosed by a doctor. I wanted to make a difference and help someone like my grandfather," Emily said.

Her education path took an unexpected turn while shadowing a surgeon at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in Alamo Heights. During a unilateral neck dissection - a surgical procedure to remove lymph nodes and treat cancer, she fell in love with surgery and knew it was her calling.

"It captured my attention when the surgeon decided to cut deeper. We could see the main artery pumping blood to the body," she added.

In addition to her studies, Anderson works as a patient care technician at Methodist Rehabilitation Center in Stone Oak, where she helps with vital signs, patient mobility, and basic care.  She plans to work full-time and apply for tuition assistance from the hospital, which will fund her education in exchange for a two-year work commitment.

She is on track to graduate in December 2025. After graduation, she hopes to pursue a career in medical sales or sports medicine, gaining valuable orthopedic experience. For now, she is focused on completing her degree and continuing her journey toward making a difference in healthcare.

“My experience has been great. The professors at St. Philip’s College are helpful, and the campus is inviting with a friendly environment. There is always an event going on outside," Emily said.

Across the Alamo Colleges District, St. Philip’s College is a hub of 18 career pathways into health-related fields, including cardiac sonography, biomedical engineering technology, vision care and nursing.
